The fear of catching coronavirus, which is transmitted to more than 73 million people worldwide, and the increase in flu cases with the arrival of winter days, prompted citizens to seek natural miracles to strengthen the immune system. While the way to prevent diseases is through a healthy diet, medicinal herbs unique to the Aegean Region, which have been indispensable on the tables for years, have also been the first choice of many people. Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Head of Food Engineering Department Prof. Dr. Nazan Turhan explained the benefits of medicinal herbs such as hibiscus, nettle, tangle, cibez, horseradish, olive leaves, ivy, which are good for many diseases from shortness of breath to blood pressure, blood circulation to stomach discomfort, and gave advice to citizens.
Prof. Dr. Turhan said, “The Aegean is a very rich region in this sense, with a large number of grass species. We should constantly benefit from these herbs, which are a storehouse of vitamins, which will help us keep our immunity strong, not only in winter. Of course, these herbs should not be seen as a direct medicine, but as an auxiliary factor in eliminating ailments. Those who have health problems should definitely consult a doctor first,”he said.
VITAMIN STORAGE CİBEZ
Stating that Cibez, one of the herbs unique to the Aegean, is a vitamin C store, Prof. Dr. Turhan stated that it also contains minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium and potassium. Prof. Dr. Turhan said, “The most important feature of Cibez is that it is good for the immune system. Since it is a vitamin C store, it has a protective effect against flu and cold. It facilitates digestion and prevents constipation. It also strengthens and regulates blood circulation. It reduces the risk of infection in the body. It makes the skin beautiful, gives vitality and brightness to the skin. It increases our energy and it is good for depression ”.

Stating that thanks to the essential oils contained in radish grass, it has revitalizing, calming and pain relieving properties. Dr. Turhan said, “The leaves of the radish herb contain vitamins A and C, calcium and iron, and contain antioxidants. The healing store is also good for ailments such as weed, asthma and shortness of breath. "It is also effective against many health problems such as diuretic, appetite, strengthening the liver, dropping stones and sand, kidney and gall bladder inflammation, asthma, bronchitis, stomach ailments, insomnia, mouth and gum wounds."
HIBISCUS, LOW MOTIVATION ALLEVİATOR
Prof. Dr. Turhan carried on: ’’Hibiscus, involves powerful antioxidants thanks to the vitamin C it contains. Also, it supports the healthy functioning of the brain, boosts memory, and is good for low motivation thanks to the antioxidants. With its antibacterial feature, it prevents fungal growth. It also helps balance blood pressure and high blood pressure. Furthermore, it supports recovery from illnesses such as the flu and cold. By activating the digestive system, it enables a fast solution to illnesses such as indigestion, gas pains, and constipation.
TANGLE GRASS SOOTHS RESPIRATION
Prof. Dr. Turhan also provides information on tangle grass: ‘’Tangle grass, which contains minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium is a rich herb as far as B and C vitamins are concerned. It’s effective on bone and muscle aches and headaches. It’s known for preventing gas pains, and balancing stomach acids. Also, the vitamins which can originally be found in the structure of tangle grass, protects eye health. In addition, tangle grass is capable of clearing infection thanks to its strong antibiotic content.
DEAD NETTLE : SOURCE OF IRON AND CALCIUM
Prof. Dr. Turhan states dead nettle is also a good source of iron and calcium. Dead nettle is known to be effective on illnesses related with stomach, liver, testiness, gall bladder, and pancreas. It is also used in treating strong headaches, kidney and bladder stones. Furthermore, other features of dead nettle is proven or detected that it is effective on lowering high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, and functions as diuretic, styptic, a liver protector and a painkiller.
YOU CAN ALSO DRINK IVY GRASS JUICE
Prof. Dr. Turhan states ivy grass is effective on complaints deriving from diabetes when mixed with salads or food. ‘’ Ivy grass is not only effective on diabetes but also on illnesses such as high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Furthermore, it is effective on a phenolic compound called oleuropein which is very effective on many types of bacteria and viruses. At home, if you want to brew tea using the leaves of olives, dry the leaves you picked up from reliable olive trees in a microwave or a normal oven after having washed them properly until they are fit to crumble. Brew the crumbled leaves by keeping them in boiled water for 10 or 12 minutes. Then it can be consumed after having drained appropriately. It’s recommended to be consumed one or three glasses a day.
